Note by Sir Oliver Joseph Lodge on Table Tipping

A table tipping is not good for conversation, but it is useful for getting definite brief answers, such as names and incidents, since it seems to be less interfered with by the mental activity of an intervening medium, and to be rather more direct. But it has difficulties of its own. The tilting of the table need not be regarded as a `physical phenomenon` in the technical or supernormal sense, yet it does not appear to be done by the muscles of those present. The effort required to tilt the table is slight, and evidentially it must, no doubt, be assumed that so far as mechanical force is concerned, it is exerted by muscular action. But my impression is that the tilting is an incipient physical phenomenon, and that though the energy, of course comes from people present, it does not appear to be applied in quite a normal way.

As regards evidence, however, the issue must be limited to intelligent direction of energy. All that can safely be claimed is that the energy is intelligently directed, and the self-stoppage of the table at the right letter of the alphabet. It will also be observed that at a table sitting it is natural for the sitters to do most of the talking, and that their object is to get definite and not verbose replies. The notes taker, who puts each letter down as it is called out by the sitters at the table.

********************************

The usual method is for the sitters to be evenly spaced around the table and to sit with their fingerstips placed lightly on the top edge of the table. One of the sitters acts as spokesperson and calls out for a spirit to make contact. The spokesperson would call out the alphabet and the table would drop down at the specific letter.

The note taker writes all letters called out by the spokesperson.

When table tipping is done with a medium, especially one known for physical phenomena, it is not unknown for the table to not only tip but to levitate. There are many photographs, taken in infrared light, showing such levitation.

The room should be darkened, with red lighting and at a comfortable temperature , Like all types of physical phenomenon the room should made secure and the spokesperson take complete control. All medium should keep their finger tips on the table.

I must advice caution should be strictly observed at all times. This is NOT a game and all table tipping exercises should be taken seriously and conducted in a sensible manner.

Always question the information that you receive and never provide leading questions. Let the mediums and spirit provide evidence for you after all we all seek the truth just like science.
